OVINGHAM is one club not talking up its finals chances this season.

The Cats are not even worried about winning games.

They just want to survive.

The club came close to folding in April last year because of a lack of players.

It staged a short comeback when other clubs donated players, but forfeited the season after playing four games, including a 218-point loss to Gepps Cross in Round 9.

Now the 104-year-old club has a new coach, a new committee and will field a new batch of players in the C2 division.

Coach Darryn Butler said the club was heading in a positive direction.

“On football web forums, people are already taking bets on how long until we fold,” Butler said.

“But we are really going to fight, not only to survive, but to get bigger.”

The former Mitchell Park coach did not care about winning matches.

“There will be no more 30-goal losses, we want to finish in the black . . . and we want to be competitive and field full teams every week of the year. If we win on top of that, even better.”

The club has 27 players on its books, including a group of former rugby players and at least 14 recruits from the Woodside Army Barracks.

Butler said the club offered prospective players the chance to try the sport or play with their mates.

“I have no assistant coach, no runners and no facilities the top clubs have, but I have plenty of time to spend with the players,” he said.

Ovingham plays its first game of the season against Port Districts at Cane Reserve this Saturday (April 2).
